How to Scan a Legitimate Connected Product

Legitimate Tags contain experiences that can be activated with a mobile phone to verify authenticity and access digital content. Here's how.

Legitimate Tags can be found on a variety of products. They may be integrated directly into products, added as a sticker to art or collectibles, or act as a tamper-proof seal like the picture above. The process for scanning the Legitimate Tag experience is the same, no matter what form factor the Legitimate Tags come in.

Depending on your mobile device, the process may be slightly different. Here are the instructions for accessing the Legitimate Tag experiences with some of the most popular mobile phones.

Once you've successfully scanned the Legitimate Tag by following the instruction below you'll need to unlock your tag to claim the item or get access to that tags' exclusive content. Learn how to unlock your tag here.

iPhone (XS and newer)

Before attempting to activate the Legitimate Tag experience, ensure that Apple Wallet or Apple Pay are not in use, cameras are not in use, the device is not in airplane mode, and the device is not locked after a restart.

  1. Bring the top of your phone near the Legitimate Tag.

  2. Tap on the Safari notification that pops up to activate the Legitimate Tag experience.

    1. If you are using a different default web browser, the notification may appear from another application (like Chrome)

iPhone (7/8/X Series)

Before attempting to activate the Legitimate Tag experience, ensure that Apple Wallet or Apple Pay are not in use, cameras are not in use, the device is not in airplane mode, and the device is not locked after a restart.

  1. Swipe up on your screen to open Control Center

  2. Locate the NFC Tag Reader icon, which looks similar to the Spotify logo or the Wi-Fi icon. Tap it to activate NFC reading.

    1. If you can't find the NFC Tag Reader icon, you may need to add it to Control Center. Follow the instructions below, in the section Add the NFC Tag Reader icon to Control Center

  3. Bring the top of your phone near the Legitimate Tag.

  4. Tap on the Safari notification that pops up to activate the Legitimate Tag experience.

    1. If you are using a different default web browser, the notification may appear from another application (like Chrome)

Add the NFC Tag Reader icon to Control Center

  1. Open 'Settings'.

  2. Tap on 'Control Center'.

  3. Scroll down to the More Controls group and tap on the green + on the left side of NFC Tag Reader.

Android (Various)

Most Android phones support activating the Legitimate Tag experience. However, the proper placement of the device may vary across different phones. Most Android phones can activate the Legitimate Tag experience by bringing the center back of the phone near the Legitimate Tag itself.
